Key Figures — The People Who Shaped the Club
Ernst Lehner, Bernd Schuster, Helmut Haller, Stefan Reuter and Markus Weinzierl — five personalities who formed FC Augsburg.
The Legends
Three players who wrote history far beyond Augsburg.
Ernst Lehner (1912–1986)
A German football icon of the 1930s — 65 caps, 31 goals.
Born November 7, 1912 in Augsburg. Played for Schwaben Augsburg and TSV 1860 Munich. Six-time top scorer. One of the most dominant players of his era in the Gauliga Bayern.

Bernd Schuster
European champion 1980, Cup Winners' Cup winner with Barcelona — and he started in Augsburg.
Schuster began his career at BC Augsburg, playing in the reserves in 1977/78. Via 1. FC Köln, he moved to FC Barcelona, where he won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1982.
Helmut Haller
World Cup final goalscorer 1966, superstar in Bologna and Milan — Augsburg's greatest son.
Haller played for Germany from 1958 to 1970, earning 33 caps with 13 goals. At AC Milan, even Giovanni Trapattoni could not contain him. In Bologna and Milan, he turned Italians into Germany fans — two decades after the war.

The Modern-Day Makers
Two men who established FCA in the Bundesliga.
Stefan Reuter
In December 2012, the 1990 World Cup winner arrived as sporting director — and overhauled everything.
Reuter replaced Jürgen Rollmann at a relegation-threatened club and stuck with coach Weinzierl. That decision would prove inspired. Under Reuter, FCA reached the Europa League and established themselves as a permanent Bundesliga fixture.
Markus Weinzierl
For four years, the Upper Bavarian coached the Swabians — and delivered the greatest successes to date.
Weinzierl took over for the 2012/13 season and proved his nerve with the final-day survival. What followed: 8th place (2013/14), 5th place plus Europa League (2014/15) and the Europa League campaign of 2015/16.

Ermedin Demirovic wrote himself into club history between 2022 and 2024. The Bosnian striker became the most efficient goalscorer in FCA’s Bundesliga history and moved to VfB Stuttgart in the summer of 2024 for a fee of around 21 million euros. It was the most expensive sale in the club’s history, surpassing the previous record set by Abdul Rahman Baba (20 million, Chelsea, 2015).
